The Todra Gorge and Dades Valley, roughly 5-6 hours from Marrakech via Ouarzazate, form the most visually dramatic stretch of road on the classic route to the Sahara: a narrow limestone canyon with walls rising up to 300 meters, followed by a valley of folded red rock and mud-brick kasbahs nicknamed the "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs."
Both are found east of Ouarzazate on the standard road toward Merzouga, making them a near-mandatory stop on any multi-day desert tour from Marrakech rather than a standalone destination most travelers visit in isolation. The Dades Valley comes first heading east, followed by the town of Tinghir and the Todra Gorge shortly after.
Just outside Tinghir, the Todra River has carved a narrow canyon through pink and grey limestone, with vertical walls closing in to as little as 10 meters apart at the base while rising up to 300 meters overhead. A flat, easy walk follows the canyon floor along the riverbed for those who just want to see the gorge; the same sheer walls also attract rock climbers from around the world, with hundreds of bolted routes on the canyon faces.
West of Tinghir, the Dades Valley earns its nickname from the density of historic fortified kasbahs and ksour lining the route, many now converted into guesthouses. The valley itself is known for its folded, wrinkled rock formations, sometimes called the "Valley of the Monkey's Fingers" or "Valley of Human Bodies" for their eroded shapes, and for a spectacular series of hairpin switchbacks climbing out of the gorge.
The two are close enough geographically to combine in a single day, but most itineraries build in an overnight stay in the Dades Valley given the overall driving distance from Marrakech — typically as part of a 3 or 4-day loop toward Merzouga. Trying to see both plus reach the desert in one very long day is possible but rushed, and misses the point of a landscape best appreciated at a slower pace.
Sturdy shoes help for the gorge walk, since the riverside path includes loose stones. If you're continuing on to the dunes afterward, our camel trekking guide covers what to expect once you reach Merzouga. For general background on Morocco's geography connecting these regions, see Wikipedia's overview of Morocco.
Spring and autumn bring the most pleasant temperatures for walking the gorge floor; summer can be intensely hot in the valley by midday, so an early start or late afternoon visit is more comfortable.
