If you only have time for one Sahara route from Marrakech, Merzouga's Erg Chebbi is the better all-round choice for first-timers because its dunes are taller and reached directly by camel from camp; Zagora is the better choice if you want a shorter drive or plan to continue toward Fes afterward.
Zagora sits roughly 6-7 hours from Marrakech by road, making a 2-day trip realistic, though 3 days is more comfortable. Merzouga is further, at around 9-10 hours, which is why nearly every operator builds it as a 3-day minimum route with an overnight stop in the Dades Valley on the way. If your schedule is genuinely tight, Zagora saves real driving hours.
Erg Chebbi, the dune sea outside Merzouga, rises up to about 150 meters and is reached by a 45-60 minute camel or 4x4 transfer straight from the road — the dunes you see in most Morocco Sahara photos are these. Zagora's nearest dunes, Erg Lihoudi, are modest, so most quality Zagora tours push further out to Erg Chigaga, which reaches up to 300 meters but requires an extra 4x4 transfer of 1-2 hours through stony desert before you even reach the sand.

Route logic matters as much as the dunes themselves. Merzouga sits on the natural road north through the Ziz Valley toward Fes, so it's the obvious choice if your trip continues to the imperial cities rather than looping back to Marrakech. Zagora, by contrast, sits on the road toward the Draa Valley and back to Marrakech via Agdz, which suits a shorter round-trip itinerary that doesn't need to connect anywhere else.
Both regions offer the full range from standard to luxury desert camps, and both include a camel trek as part of the standard package. Merzouga's larger visitor numbers mean more competition and generally more polished camp facilities; Zagora's smaller scale can feel quieter and less crowded, at the cost of a longer final approach to the best dunes.
For a first Sahara experience with the most photogenic, easily reached dunes, choose Merzouga. If your schedule is under time pressure, or you specifically want a quieter, less-visited desert experience and don't mind a longer 4x4 transfer to reach the biggest dunes, Zagora is a legitimate alternative.
