Marrakech rewards a mix of structured sightseeing and simply getting lost in the medina. The essentials are the Jemaa el-Fnaa square, the souks, Bahia Palace, and the Majorelle Garden, but the city's real charm often shows up in the smaller riads, hidden courtyards, and rooftop views you stumble on between the main sights.
Jemaa el-Fnaa is Marrakech's central square and the natural starting point for any visit. By day it's relatively calm, with orange juice stalls and snake charmers; by evening it transforms into a food market with dozens of stalls, storytellers, and musicians. The surrounding medina, a maze of narrow alleys, is where most of the souks are, and it's worth budgeting at least half a day just to wander without a fixed plan.
The souks are organized loosely by trade: leather in one area, metalwork in another, textiles elsewhere. Bargaining is expected and part of the experience rather than a nuisance; a good rule of thumb is to start around a third of the initial asking price. Our Marrakech vs Fes comparison covers how Marrakech's souks differ from those in Fes if you're deciding which city to prioritize.
Marrakech is also a base for excellent day trips. The Atlas Mountains, the Agafay desert, and the Ourika Valley are all within a couple of hours, giving you mountain or desert scenery without an overnight stay. See our Atlas Mountains and Imlil day trip guide for the most popular of these options.
A traditional hammam is one of the most authentic experiences in Marrakech, and most riads can arrange one. Pair it with an evening at Jemaa el-Fnaa's food stalls for tagine, grilled meats, and fresh juices, or book a rooftop restaurant overlooking the square for sunset.
Stay inside the medina walls for the most atmospheric experience, though the Guéliz district offers a more modern alternative with easier taxi access. Comfortable shoes matter more than anything else, since the medina's uneven stone streets see a lot of walking. For broader planning context, the Visit Morocco site lists current opening hours for major sites.
If you'd rather not navigate the medina alone on your first day, we offer a private guided Marrakech city tour that covers the main sights with a knowledgeable local guide.
