The Ourika Valley, about 30-35 km and roughly an hour's drive south of Marrakech into the High Atlas foothills, is the easiest half-to-full-day escape from the city — the drive alone is short enough that you're at the Setti Fatma waterfalls before lunchtime, with Berber villages and mountain views the whole way.
The road out of Marrakech follows the Ourika River upstream, passing roadside stalls selling pottery, rugs, and local produce, along with argan oil cooperatives where you can watch women's cooperatives press oil by hand. The valley narrows gradually as you climb, with terraced fields and stone-and-mud Berber villages clinging to the slopes on either side.
The valley's main draw is the Setti Fatma waterfalls, a series of seven cascades reached from the village of the same name. The first one or two falls are an easy to moderate walk of about 20-30 minutes; continuing to all seven involves scrambling over rocks and takes roughly 2-3 hours round trip. Local guides at the trailhead can lead the full route and point out safe footholds, which is worth it if you plan to go beyond the first waterfall.
Beyond the waterfalls, the Ourika Valley is a good introduction to rural Berber life in the Atlas foothills: mudbrick houses, terraced barley and walnut fields, and mule paths connecting villages that have no vehicle road. Many day trips include a stop at a local home or cooperative for mint tea and a short explanation of daily mountain life.
Ourika is the closest and gentlest of Marrakech's popular day trips, which makes it ideal if you have limited time or are traveling with young children. Wear shoes with good grip if you plan to walk beyond the first waterfall, since the rocks stay damp and slippery. Bring a swimsuit in warmer months, as some of the pools near the falls are suitable for a quick dip.
