For most first-time visitors, Marrakech is the better city to fly into: it has a walkable medina packed with sights within minutes of arrival, while Casablanca is primarily a business and transport hub with fewer standalone attractions. Casablanca still makes sense if you find a notably cheaper or more direct flight, since Morocco's train network connects the two cities in under three hours.
Casablanca's Mohammed V Airport is Morocco's largest international hub, with more long-haul and intercontinental routes, particularly from North America. Marrakech Menara Airport has excellent connections to Europe, especially on low-cost carriers, and sits just a short taxi ride from the medina, compared to Casablanca's airport, which is a 30-45 minute drive or train ride from the city center. If your route is dominated by European budget airlines, Marrakech is often both cheaper and more convenient; if you're flying from further afield, Casablanca may offer the only direct option.
| Factor | Marrakech | Casablanca |
|---|---|---|
| Main draw | Historic medina, souks, palaces | Hassan II Mosque, modern business city |
| Airport to center | 10-20 minutes | 30-45 minutes |
| Long-haul flight options | Fewer, mostly via Europe | More, including direct intercontinental routes |
| Days worth spending | 2-4+ days | 1 day is usually enough |
| Best for | First-time visitors, culture-focused trips | Flight convenience, brief business stopovers |
Marrakech's medina, souks, palaces and nearby day trips give you several days of sightseeing within a short taxi ride of your riad; our things to do in Marrakech guide covers the highlights. Casablanca, by contrast, is a modern commercial capital with wide boulevards and Art Deco architecture, and its single unmissable sight is the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world and one of the few in Morocco that non-Muslim visitors can tour; see our Casablanca travel guide for the full picture.
Compare total cost and travel time including the connection, not just the headline flight price ā a cheap Casablanca flight plus a train ticket and extra night can end up costing more than a slightly pricier direct Marrakech flight.
