Marrakech is, for good reason, where most first-time visitors start: it has the greatest concentration of riads, souks, day-trip options and international flight connections. From there, the Sahara Desert (via Merzouga or Zagora) is the single most requested addition for first-timers, followed by Fez for its historic medina, or Chefchaouen for its blue streets if time allows. We rarely recommend trying to cover Marrakech, Fez, the desert, and the coast all in under a week — better to do fewer places well.
Seven days is enough for Marrakech plus a 3-day desert loop. Ten to fourteen days allows a proper grand tour including Fez, Chefchaouen, and the Atlantic coast without constant rushed transfers. Anything under 5 days is workable but really only suits a Marrakech-focused city break with day trips rather than a full-country itinerary.
Most new visitors are surprised by how walkable and atmospheric the medinas are, how affordable good food and riads can be, and how dramatically the landscape changes within a single day's drive — snow-capped mountains, desert dunes and Atlantic coastline are all within reach of Marrakech. Some are also surprised by how insistent street touts can be in the busiest tourist zones, which is more an annoyance than a danger and eases quickly once you develop a confident "no, thank you."
